Frequently asked questions

What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional therapy is a scientific, evidence-based, holistic and individual therapy which aims to optimise health and wellbeing by encouraging the body's natural ability to heal. The therapy recognises that all individuals are biochemically unique and good health depends on a number of factors including genetically inherited weaknesses, diet, lifestyle and environment.
What conditions could nutritional therapy support?
Nutritional Therapy can support a wide variety of health issues such as:
  • weight management and weight loss
  • digestive complaints such as bloating, indigestion, IBS, and other digestive problems
  • female health issues, including fertility and hormone imbalances
  • energy level and vitality
  • stress and anxiety
  • sleep quality
  • other, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol
What is the difference between a nutritional therapist and a dietician?
Dieticians work in a variety of settings, from the NHS to education, and in government roles. Their expertise can be applied on a one to one basis to treat diagnosed conditions such as diabetes, cancer or kidney disease or on a wider scale to inform the general public about food and health policy or educating health professionals about nutrition. They are statutorily regulated by the Health Professional Council. Nutritional therapists typically work in private practice seeing individuals on a one to one basis to focus on optimising health or helping to manage symptoms associated with chronic disease. Nutritional therapists take into account that every person is unique and has an individual set of dietary requirements as a consequence of factors such as current and past diet and lifestyle choices plus genetic predisposition. The profession is voluntarily regulated by BANT (British Association of Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapists) and CNHC (Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council) which have their own Code of Conduct and Complaints Procedure to which all registered Nutritional Therapists must comply
What does a consultation involve?
In advance of the consultation, clients are asked to fill out a confidential health and nutrition questionnaire, creating a background understanding of your needs. It is important that this questionnaire is returned at least 2 days prior to the consultation to allow enough time to analyse your health history. Copies of any test result you have from your GP or other health professionals would be helpful in creating a personalised plan. The initial consultation will last up to 90 minutes, during which your health goals, health history, current eating habits and lifestyle will be discussed in detail. During the session, we will discuss a personalised programme which fits with your lifestyle and your food preferences. The health programme will be developed to easily integrate into your life and work for you. The full detailed programme will be emailed to you within 48 hours.
Is it safe for me to use nutritional therapy whilst I am taking prescription medication?
Nutritional therapists are trained to understand the interactions between pharmaceutical drugs and nutrients therefore the recommendations included within the health plan will be designed to fit with your current medical prescription. Full disclosure of current medications is requested in the questionnaire completed prior to the consultation. It is important to recognise that Nutritional Therapy is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Clients are always recommended to inform their GP about their visit and use of nutritional therapy.
Can't we get all the nutrients we need from a well-balanced diet?
Unfortunately many diets these days fall a long way short of the optimum levels of nutrients that the body requires to stay healthy. Modern lifestyles place extra pressure on our bodies - stress, pollution, medication, caffeine, alcohol, and processed food intake all increase our bodies need for nutrients.
Are supplements really safe to take?
Yes they are. However, they must be taken as their name suggests in addition to a good diet and lifestyle. Certain supplements may interact with medication therefore advice should always be sought from a licensed nutritional therapist or healthcare professional, before taking supplements. As nutrient needs differ greatly from person to person, it is wise to have a consultation to assess your health and to tailor a supplement programme to your needs.
Can I be referred to Scorpius Nutrition by my GP?
Although many GPs suggest their patients consult with a nutritional therapist for many of their health concerns, they will not make a formal referral to a specific individual or organisation. A consultation is not yet available on the NHS.
How many consultations will I need?
This depends on your current health, your individual concerns and goals and the level of support you need. Most people have an initial consultation and between 1-4 follow-up consultations, especially if they have been experiencing symptoms for several months or years.
What if I have to cancel my appointment?
I understand that life can be unpredictable, but if you have to cancel an appointment I would be grateful if you would give me 24hours notice, if this is not possible then the price of the appointment will be incurred.
What payment methods do you accept?
You can pay by cash or bank transfer, payment is due at the end of the consultation. A reduced fee deal is available when an initial consultation plus a follow-up are purchased together. See pricing page for current package deals.
Will you recommend functional testing?
Functional tests are laboratory tests, of blood, urine, saliva etc. which, in some cases, can prove very useful in order to determine the direction of the therapy, or to assess progress, however, this route will only be taken with your full agreement. It should be noted that tests undertaken by private laboratories are charged at an additional cost however some types of testing can be undertaken by your GP on request.
What if I have questions or concerns after my appointment?
Concerns or queries about any areas of the agreed health plan including supplementation and time frames should be highlighted promptly for clarification. Support and guidance via telephone or email is offered for a specified period after each appointment.
Is my personal information kept private and confidential?
All personal data is stored in a confidential and secure location in accordance with the UK data protection laws.
